Startups ‘losing faith’ in government tech promises

UK startups are losing faith in the government after years of unfulfilled promises and persistent procurement barriers. Despite the new “Buy British” campaign, the Startup Coalition warns that high-level political commitments will only deliver real change for UK founders if they cut bureaucracy and open access for smaller businesses. Times

OpenAI making changes after hacking incident

OpenAI has overhauled its model testing processes after a recent agent breach led to an attack on AI startup Hugging Face. OpenAI has devoted more resources to monitoring its agents, and has vowed to tighten automated monitoring systems to detect potential problems faster. FT

Humanoid robot shipments up 300%

While nobody really knows exactly how many humanoid robots shipped globally in H1, a recent Counterpoint Research report shows that more than 22,000 were distributed, nearly 300% more year on year. China’s Humanoid Robot Scene Application Alliance says Chinese vendors shipped more than 30,000 in the first half of the year alone. Forbes

Early signs of UK productivity growth

Economists believe early signs of technology-focused productivity improvements could mark a shift in UK economic growth after a period of underperformance. Analysts point to rising AI adoption across sectors as the driver of the upsurge, and further growth could help ease some of Britain’s public finance strains. FT

Fractile in funding talks at $6.5bn valuation

Fractile, a UK-based chip developer that supplies Anthropic and other customers, is in talks to raise $600 million at a $6.5 billion valuation. Investors in the round are likely to include Lightspeed Venture Partners, Redpoint Ventures, Thrive Capital and Founders Fund. Bloomberg

Callosum secures $100m Seed round

AI startup Callosum, which is building systems software to match specific AI tasks with the cheapest suitable models and chips, has raised a $100 million Seed round led by Atomico, with further investment from Plural, DCVC, and the UK’s Sovereign AI Fund. UKTN

Plymouth’s Oshen raises $5m for marine robots

Oshen, a Plymouth-based developer of autonomous sail-powered vessels, has raised $5 million in funding from Lunar Ventures, Albion VC, Twin Track and Concept Ventures. The company will use the funds to upgrade its manufacturing capabilities. Times

ACF Investors leads £1.6m Singular Photonics round

Singular Photonics, a fabless semiconductor company based in Edinburgh, has raised £1.6 million in a round led by ACF Investors, with further investment from Wren Capital, Cambridge Angels, Scottish Enterprise, Quantum Exponential, and Old College Capital. Tech Funding News

British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) boss Shevaun Haviland warns that “resilience alone” won’t spur economic growth, calling on the government to ease the tax and regulatory burden on UK businesses ahead of the Autumn Budget. City AM

How to power the AI era

Conventional, century-old iron power transformers are a major bottleneck for AI data centres because of long lead times and an inability to handle surging energy demands. Sam Hill, Investment Analyst at TDK Ventures, identifies solid-state transformers (SSTs) as the emerging solution, which delivers higher efficiency, smaller footprints, and faster deployment to power the AI era. Interface We’ve spoken a lot (no pun intended) about voice recognition and speech AI recently. How could we not, when the NHS’s AI phone system struggles to understand Yorkshire accents? Emma AI was rolled out in South Yorkshire to reduce queues, improve patient satisfaction and save money. However, patient satisfaction is… shall we say, taking a nosedive? Unsurprisingly, being misunderstood by technology is leading to patients “experiencing stress and frustration”. We’d be pretty mad, too. Someone else getting on the voice train is a person with a distinctive accent: Sir Michael Caine. He’s teaming up with the Universities of York and Southampton on a study that will use real and AI-generated voice samples of his voice to test if the public can spot speech deepfakes through linguistic cues. The project aims to enhance public detection of deceptive audio and strengthen IP protections for creators against unauthorised voice cloning. Not a lot of people know that. Well, they do now.

One thing a lot of people do know is that Meta is in the dock. The tech giant has been ordered to pay nearly $1 billion in penalties and remediation for harms to teens who used platforms such as Instagram. Meanwhile, a federal trial is underway, with four US states seeking billions of dollars from Meta on behalf of a group of 29 states that filed a lawsuit in 2023, arguing the company violated child privacy laws. These are serious allegations that affect everyone. Is your screen time higher or lower than your Gen Z family members’? One thing that might help cut down on children’s internet usage is plans from OpenAI to launch ChatGPT for teens with stricter safety features and a special study mode, so it can’t do kids’ homework for them. What a delightful end to the summer.
